Martha McSally Appointed to Fill Senate Seat Held by John McCain

This morning, Gov. Doug Ducey announced that Republican U.S. Rep. Martha McSally will replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl to fill for the next two years the Senate seat long held by the late U.S. Sen. John McCain. The governor’s decision, which will take effect next month, comes just weeks after McSally narrowly lost the race for Arizona’s other Senate seat to Democrat Kyrsten Sinema. Sinema will assume the role of the state’s senior senator, and will be sworn in on Jan. 3, with the new class of senators. The appointment makes Arizona one of only a handful of states with two women in the U.S. Senate.
